Turkey, Iceland share points in UEFA Nations League opener
Teams are still warming up, feel each other out.
Turkey and Iceland played to a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Nations League opener on Thursday in Konya. The home side took the lead through Cengiz Under in the 40th minute, but Iceland equalized through Birkir Bjarnason just before half-time.
Both teams had chances to win the game in the second half, but neither could find a winning goal. The result leaves Turkey and Iceland with one point each after the first round of matches in Group 3 of League B.
Turkey started the game brightly and created a number of chances in the early stages. However, they were unable to make the most of their opportunities and Iceland grew into the game as the half wore on.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play when Bjarnason headed home a corner in the 40th minute. Turkey responded well to going behind and equalized just before half-time through Under, who fired home a low shot from the edge of the area.
The second half was a more even affair, with both teams creating chances. However, neither side could find a winning goal and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result leaves Turkey and Iceland with one point each after the first round of matches in Group 3 of League B. Turkey will travel to Russia in their next match on Sunday, while Iceland will host the Faroe Islands.
